East Renfrewshire Council steps up fight against fly-tipping with new CCTV measures

28th May 2026

East Renfrewshire Council is taking action to tackle fly-tipping with the introduction of enhanced enforcement measures including CCTV surveillance.

The Council’s Environmental Health team has joined forces with other services to identify and prosecute those responsible, reinforcing a clear message that fly-tipping will not be tolerated.

As part of this initiative, warning signs are being placed at known hotspots to deter offenders.  Alongside this, CCTV cameras are being installed across various locations within the East Renfrewshire area to capture evidence of illegal dumping and identify perpetrators.

The Council is committed to applying the ‘polluter pays’ principle, ensuring individuals responsible for fly-tipping are held accountable for their actions. Offenders face a £500 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) and failure to pay will result in the case being referred to the Procurator Fiscal for consideration of prosecution.

In a recent fly-tipping incident on Mearns Road, members of the public provided pictures as evidence and a £500 FPN was issued.

Once the culprit was presented with the evidence and the threat of court action, they paid the fine and the waste was removed for recycling.

Environment and Housing Convener, Councillor Danny Devlin said: “Fly-tipping is a serious environmental issue that damages our communities and places an unnecessary financial burden on public resources. We are determined to identify those responsible and take the appropriate legal action. Our message is clear – fly-tipping will not be accepted in East Renfrewshire.”

Members of the public also play an important role in helping to tackle this issue.

Anyone who witnesses fly-tipping or has evidence such as CCTV or dashcam footage, or information linking waste to an individual or business, is urged to report it via the East Renfrewshire Council website: https://www.eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/article/3912/Report-fly-tipping

This initiative forms part of the local authority’s Litter Strategy which commits to improving open spaces across East Renfrewshire.  Aligned to A Place to Grow, the community planning partnership vision, this strategy aims to build positive change in behaviours with litter and waste across East Renfrewshire.
