Johnstone Burgh travel to McKenna Park on Saturday (5th September) to face WoSFL Premier Division 3 side St Anthony’s FC, in the second round of The South Region Challenge Cup.
St Anthony’s FC were formed in 1902. The Govan Club won four Scottish Junior League titles in 1917, 1918, 1919 and 1921, as well as West of Scotland Junior Cup in 1938. “The Ants” also reached the final of The Scottish Junior Cup in 1919 and 1925, but finished runners-up on both occasions to Rutherglen Glencairn and Saltcoats Victoria respectively. The club play their home matches at McKenna Park, in the Drumoyne area of Govan on a grass surface.
It’s been a difficult start to the season for St Anthony’s, who sit bottom of the WoSFL Division 3 table in 16th place, on 3 points, after one win and four defeats from their opening five matches.
Their only win so far this season came in a 5-3 home win over Lugar Boswell Thistle on Saturday 8th August. In the clubs most recent match, they suffered a 3-0 home defeat to East Kilbride YM, last Saturday (29th August). St Anthony’s manager Barry McColgan will still believe his side can cause a massive upset at McKenna Park on Saturday.
Johnstone Burgh will be hoping to continue their positive start to the season.
The Burgh currently sit in 8th place in the Scottish Lowland League West table, on 11 points, after three wins, two draws and one defeat from their opening six matches.
The Keanie Park side are in good recent form after two consecutive home wins over Newton Stewart on Saturday 22nd August, and Dalbeattie Star last Saturday (29th August). Johnstone Burgh manager Stevie Farrell will be in very confident mood about his team’s chances of progressing into the next round, in Govan this weekend.
