Johnstone Burgh travel to Portland Park this Wednesday evening, 16th September, to face Troon FC in the Scottish Lowland League West. This will be the second meeting between the clubs this season, the first being when the Burgh came out on top in our opening league game on Wednesday 29th July, in a 2-0 victory at Keanie Park, thanks to goals from Mark Durnan and Aaron Mason.
Troon FC were formed in 1946. The club have won the West of Scotland Super League First Division in 2014, Ayrshire Second Division in 1997 and 2001, the West of Scotland Cup in 2005, where they beat Arthurlie 4-3 in the final, and most recently the West of Scotland League Cup in 2026, when they beat Auchinleck Talbot 1-0 in the final. The Seasiders have also won several other cup competitions in the Ayrshire region down the years.
Troon FC play their home matches at Portland Park, and play on a grass surface, which is considered one of the best in the league. The ground has a capacity for 2000 spectators. Portland Park is an approximately 10 minute walk away from Troon railway station. By road, it is located near to the A78 leading onto the A77, M77 and M8. The ground is an approximately 45 minute drive away from Keanie Park.
The Seasiders had an excellent 2025/26 season, where they finished in third position in the WoSFL Premier League. The icing on the cake for manager Jimmy Kirkwood’s men though, was when the club won the West of Scotland League Cup at Broadwood Stadium on Sunday 4th May, by beating Auchinleck Talbot 1-0, thanks to a last gasp winner from Sam Jamieson.
Troon currently sit in 9th place in the Scottish Lowland League West table on 12 points, after eight matches played. The Seasiders come into this match in good form with four wins in their last five matches across all competitions. In their last outing in the Scottish Lowland League West, Troon beat Newton Stewart 5-1 at Blairmount Park, thanks to a Jack Allan double, then further goals from Gareth Armstrong, Dean Fulton and Leyton Dunlop.
Johnstone Burgh currently sit in 8th place in the Scottish Lowland League West table, on 12 points after seven matches played. The Burgh’s recent form is good, with three wins and a draw in their last four matches across all competitions. In our last match in the Scottish Lowland League West, played on Saturday 12th September, manager Stevie Farrell’s men produced an incredible comeback from 4-1 down with 20 minutes remaining, to claim an unlikely point against Cumbernauld Colts at Broadwood Stadium. A Mark Durnan double, and further goals from Aaron Mason and an Oliver Hynd own goal ensured the game ended 4-4.
