Larger public bins rolled out across East Renfrewshire

19th Feb 2026

East Renfrewshire Council has begun installing nearly 600 larger public bins across the authority.

With a capacity of 360-litres, these new bins are three times the size of the existing bins, which are being replaced. Overall, this will increase the total capacity of public bins by 132,000-litres, up to 208,800-litres. As well as increased capacity, the bins will reduce overflow, helping to further support our wider aims of improving street cleanliness and encouraging responsible disposal of waste.

Almost 300 new bins have already been put in place and the full roll out of 580 should be complete by the end of April. The increased bin capacity will also ease the demand for daily emptying, resulting in more staff time to focus on other duties such as litter picking, cleaning in and around benches and clearing leaves from shopfront areas.

This project forms part of the actions from the Council’s litter strategy, launched last year, which commits to improving open spaces across East Renfrewshire.

Aligned to A Place to Grow, the community planning partnership vision, this strategy aims to build positive change in behaviours with litter and waste across East Renfrewshire.

East Renfrewshire continually scores high in litter cleanliness levels, achieving 94.9% in 2024/25, as measured by Keep Scotland Beautiful who monitor litter across Scotland, however the Council is not complacent. It recognises that littering can have a detrimental effect on communities and the wellbeing of residents, so more public bin capacity will allow residents and visitors to dispose of their litter responsibly.

Environment and Housing Convener, Councillor Danny Devlin, said: “A clean and well cared for East Renfrewshire is important to us all. We want to work with our residents and communities to support a cleaner environment for us all to flourish, thrive and live well. Our vision is to Keep East Renfrewshire Beautiful and these new bins provide significantly more capacity for the disposal of litter. Littering isn’t acceptable; with nearly 600 public bins available across East Renfrewshire, plus your household bins, there really is no excuse.”
