50th Anniversary of the launch of Radio Clyde 261

6th Feb 2024

TONIGHT, Tuesday 6 February at 8pm on Quality Radio DAB & 107.5 FM – a celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the launch of Radio Clyde at a Civic Reception at Glasgow City Chamber.

The programme features interviews with many of the DJs at the launch to include Dave Marshall, Steve Jones, Dougie Donnelly, Tony Currie and Andy Park, Head of Entertainment.

Quality Radio’s James Cameron was at the Civic Reception at Glasgow City Council Chambers in George Square, Glasgow.

Radio Clyde 261 launched at 10.30pm on 31 December 1973 with full programming starting on 1 January 1974 on 261m.

The 261m / 1152 kHz MW/AM service continued as ‘Clyde 2’ then became ‘Greatest Hits Radio’ in 2023.

On Thursday 14 December 2023, the iconic “261m” service ceased when the medium wave transmitter was closed down as it was felt the audience had migrated to digital platforms to include DAB radio.  Research had indicated that the 1152 AM service had very few listeners and a planned shut down of local services took place across Scotland.

AM/medium wave broadcasting has almost ceased in the UK, similar to what has happened in Europe.
