East Renfrewshire Big Clean Up goes on tour

31st Jan 2026

East Renfrewshire Council is taking the Big Clean Up on tour across all five East Renfrewshire Council wards this year, and it kicks off in Ward 4, which covers Clarkston, Busby, Stamperland, Netherlee and Williamwood.

Following the success of last year’s Big Clean Up in Barrhead, where more than 4 tonnes of litter and fly-tipping was cleared by nearly 300 Council employees, local pupils and volunteers, dates for events across East Renfrewshire have been confirmed as follows:

  • Friday 6 March – Ward 4: Clarkston, Netherlee & Williamwood
  • Friday 29 May – Ward 2: Newton Mearns North & Neilston
  • Friday 12 June – Ward 5: Newton Mearns South & Eaglesham
  • Friday 11 September – Ward 3: Giffnock & Thornliebank
  • Friday 23 October – Ward 1: Barrhead, Liboside & Uplawmoor

The Big Clean Ups see the Council spend the day tackling litter and fly-tipping hot spots to help keep East Renfrewshire beautiful. Anyone unsure of the Ward they live in can find out here: eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk/Find-my-councillor

The Council wants to involve the local community in these events, so anyone willing to do some litter picking at the first event in Ward 4 (Friday 6 March) can sign up by emailing ercbigclean@eastrenfrewshire.gov.uk. All equipment will be provided. Local schools, community groups and businesses will also be invited to play their part. A call for volunteers for future events will be issued ahead of each clean up.

Last year’s Barrhead event coincided with the launch of a new litter strategy for the local authority which commits to improving open spaces across East Renfrewshire. Aligned to A Place to Grow, the community planning partnership vision, this strategy aims to build positive change in behaviours with litter and waste across East Renfrewshire.

East Renfrewshire Environment & Housing Convener Danny Devlin said: “We had a fantastic turn out at last year’s Big Clean Up in Barrhead, with the efforts of everyone involved making a huge difference, so I am really pleased that we will be replicating this across East Renfrewshire this year.

A clean and well cared for East Renfrewshire is important to us all. We want to work with our partners and communities to support a cleaner environment for us all to flourish, thrive and live well. Our vision is to Keep East Renfrewshire Beautiful and this is exactly what our Big Clean Up events aims to do. It allows us to tidy up problem areas as well as highlighting that littering and fly-tipping isn’t acceptable; with over 500 public bins, plus your household bins, there really is no excuse.

So, I’d encourage anyone living or working in Busby, Clarkston, Netherlee, Stamperland or Williamwood to get involved in the first Big Clean Up of 2026!”
