East Renfrewshire Council is set to reduce the speed limit on more than 1,100 residential streets and school zones to 20mph in an effort to make roads in the local authority area safer for everyone.
The changes, which come into effect on Monday 1 December 2025, will support the Scottish Government’s commitment to implementing 20mph speed limits on those roads where it is appropriate to do so by the end of 2025.
In response to this nationwide policy, a full review of all streets in East Renfrewshire was undertaken, alongside a public consultation exercise which considered the benefits of introducing reduced speed limits.
A Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to reduce the speed limit on the identified residential streets and school zones to 20mph was approved by elected members earlier this year and will be enforceable once all appropriate signage is in place.
Scottish Government research indicates that if a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle travelling at 20mph, they are seven times more likely to survive than if they’re hit at 30mph.
Councillor Danny Devlin, Convener for Environment and Housing, said: “Lowering the speed limit on more than 1,100 residential streets across the area is expected to make East Renfrewshire’s roads safer for all.
“Slower speeds give drivers more time to react, reducing the likelihood of collisions, and a lower limit provides a much safer environment for pedestrians, especially children and our most vulnerable residents, so these changes are very much welcomed.
“In turn, it is hoped that this speed limit reduction will encourage more people to walk, wheel and cycle for short trips around their local area and have a positive impact on communities and the local environment as a whole.
“Ensuring our streets are safe and attractive for all of our residents is important to delivering on our vision of a future where our children and young people flourish, our communities and places thrive and we all live well.”
