Sporting Memories opens new club in Barrhead

14th Nov 2023

Sporting Memories are opening a new club in Barrhead on Thursday 16 November and are looking for members and session supporters.  Older people with a passion for sport are being invited to join the new club.

The club will be meeting at the Community Hub at 8 Carlibar Road, Barrhead G78 1AA.  The club will meet weekly every Thursday morning from 10.30am until 12.30pm.

Sporting Memories is a charity which operates free community-based clubs across the UK and are delighted to be expanding their network to Barrhead with the support of Voluntary Action, East Renfrewshire.

The club welcomes older people who like to make friends and connections in their local area and have a passion for sport.

The club uses the power of remembering and talking about sport alongside physical activity to support older people aged 50+ to live better lives, including those living with dementia, depression, or living in isolation and lonely circumstances.

It’s a great opportunity for local people from all backgrounds to not only share their stories but to also partake in a weekly session that ignite old memories through photographs and quizzes as well as getting active again with a range of fun games and inclusive exercises. And if that isn’t enough, there’s also the opportunity to have a cup of tea or coffee (normally with some biscuits included as well) at half-time.

A member of the club said: “We believe the sessions are ideal for members who have an extra bit of time to go along to and they welcome all to their sessions.

“The club in Barrhead is looking for both members to come along and enjoy the weekly sessions as well as local people who have the time and interest to volunteer to help run or support the clubs.

“We would also very much welcome anyone interested in becoming a session supporter with us. A passion for sport isn’t essential for helping to run our club in Barrhead. But you will enjoy reminiscing with older adults and you’ll love the banter and have fun.

“We are looking for someone who enjoys talking with older adults and who will encourage our club members to get involved in the discussion.

“The session supporter helps to enable the smooth running of the club session and welcomes members as they arrive. You will be part of a team of volunteers providing this service for a couple of hours on a weekly basis.”

The Barrhead club launches on Thursday at The Community Hub at Barrhead Centre, 8 Carlibar Road, G78 1AA
